Colline Moreniche

The Morainic Hills of Lower Garda Lake (average heights between 100 and 250 meters above sea level) are wedged between the plains of the Po’ valley (Province of Mantua) in the south and lake Garda in the north (Provinces of Brescia and Verona), thus forming a semi circle which embraces the southern shore of Lake Garda. The territory was geologically formed after the phases of expansion and retreat of the glaciers and is characterized by spots of little forests, slight slopes in alternation to flat plains, small lakes and water sources, vines and olive groves. Ever since the Neolithic era the morainic hills have been inhabited and so endless touristic offers can be proposed for cultural visits (medieval towns, castles, Museums), naturalistic tours (excursions on foot, on horse-back, by bike) and folkloristic itineraries (historical commemorations, village festivals, music events). The numerous cultural attractions include the historical background and traces left by Etruscans and Romans and subsequently, during the Renaissance,  by the eminent Gonzaga family, who used to seek the climatic freshness of these hills during hot summer days, or else the traces of the historical battles of Italy’s struggle for independency (the Risorgimento) in the towns of Solferino and San Martino, where the International Red Cross was founded in the 19th century.
